Nordenham Metall GmbH produces more than 95,000 tonnes of lead annually, making it one of the largest lead smelters in Europe.
In addition to the standardised production of 50 kg lead ingots in soft lead quality, we also produce special lead alloys to meet more than 200 individual customer requirements.
The sulphur-containing process gases are also used at our Nordenham plant. From these and the sulfur in processed car batteries, we produce about 70,000 tonnes of sulphuric acid are produced for the chemicals industry every year.
In addition, the Nordenham-based company is being transformed into a polymetallic smelter. With our reduction furnace, we can flexibly recycle various secondary raw materials and extract high-quality metals.

Lead-containing residues such as processed lead-acid batteries, used lead, scrap lead, bullet trap sand, ashes, drosses and leaching residues from the zinc industry containing lead come to us at Nordenham from all over the world.

Nordenham Metall produces lead from both primary and secondary sources. Primary lead is extracted as new lead from lead ores. In contrast, secondary lead is recovered by recycling existing lead products such as spent batteries, lead scrap and industrial waste.
Car batteries account for the largest share of lead recycling. They are first crushed in a processing plant and the various components (lead, plastics, sulphuric acid, etc.) are separated. Subsequently the lead-containing intermediate products are then melted down. The raw lead produced is refined and, if required, custom alloyed. The end product is a lead ingot that is virtually indistinguishable from newly produced lead. That is because lead can be recycled almost indefinitely and is therefore an important driver for a successful circular economy. No downcycling or loss of quality takes place when recovering lead.
Lead is one of the oldest metallic materials of our time. Even the ancient Romans used the heavy metal to make pipes, drinking vessels and other items. Today, we know about the metal’s toxicity, which is why it is only used under strictly controlled conditions.
And yet lead is by no means yesterday’s news. Its unique properties continue to make it a popular and important material in many industries:
High density
With a density of 11.35 g/cm³, lead is one of the densest metals on Earth. This makes it particularly suitable for shielding against gamma and X-ray radiation so it is used in the field of radiation protection and medical technology, for example.
High resistance
Unlike many other metals, lead is extremely resistant to UV radiation and corrosion. The heavy metal is unaffected by a large number of acids. That is why lead is often used in equipment and apparatus for chemical processes.
Heavy weight
Lead is not only useful because of its heavy weight, but also because of its excellent price-weight ratio. So another of its many uses to produce weights, for example in diving.
Highly malleable
No other metal with a similarly high density is as easy to work with as lead. Lead is comparatively easy to produce and is still malleable even when cold – an advantage in many industries and in numerous applications.
Special electrochemical properties
Combining lead, lead oxide and sulphuric acid creates the lead-acid battery - an effective electrochemical system for storing energy.
Lead and lead products are used in a wide range of industries. More than 80% of the lead extracted worldwide is used to produce car batteries. Other important areas of application include:
- the chemicals industry, e.g. to produce lead chambers for the extraction of sulphuric acid, vessels for the storage of acids or the lining of chemical reactors
- radiation protection in the form of lead aprons, lead doors or even lead glasses for shielding from radiation
- weights, e.g. for diving
- sheathing for power cables
